Earth’s magnetic field was pummeled by a double coronal mass ejection (CME) over the weekend, giving rise to more than 24 hours of geomagnetic storms and exceptionally beautiful northern lights. Here, astrophotographer Brad Goldpaint has captured a rare sight: a stunning pink aurora borealis.

Larger spiral galaxies—each containing hundreds of billions of stars—are thought to grow by “eating” neighboring dwarf galaxies, which contain just a few billion stars.

As the smaller, satellite galaxy is pulled toward the hungry spiral, gravity distorts and shreds the dwarf, so that within a few billion years the smaller galaxy is reduced to wisps and tendrils called tidal streams. Over a few billion more years, the faint streams of stars are assimilated into the spiral.

In the the Marvel Age of Comics, covers were continually tweaked and adjusted right up till the moment they were sent off to the printer. Both editor Stan Lee and publisher Martin Goodman had strong opinions as to what constituted a successful cover—which was considered the most important part of the magazine, the thing that would sell it to prospective buyers. Additionally, the Comics Code Authority would occasionally request changes to covers they considered too violent or salacious.

Archival stats were shot in most cases before these last-minute adjustments were made. These stats wound up often being used later for reprints or overseas editions of the books, allowing us to see what was changed and to conjecture about why.

On this first issue cover to X-MEN #1 by Jack Kirby and Sol Brodsky, a number of adjustments, large and small, were made so as to create greater clarity of the image, and to cleanly silhouette most of the characters. The grass line in the background was removed, as was Marvel Girl’s telekinetic bolt. Marvel Girl herself was enlarged and repositioned higher on the cover. A few of the motion lines around Angel were removed, and a portion of his wing was redrawn to make it larger and to avoid the bad tangent with the bottom of the X. The circle was removed from around the blurb comparing the issue to FANTASTIC FOUR, but a smaller box was placed around the 12 cent cover price. And a few other minor things were changed and simplified.

This is a corrosion cast of the blood vascular system of the human brain. Basically, they fill the blood vessels with a kind of plastic material and then remove the organic tissue, so you can see all the blood vessels without anything else to get in the way. We know that the brain is a huge drain on oxygen and so needs a lot of blood, but I think this is really cool that you can see how well vascularized it really is and how very many blood vessels and capillaries there are in the brain.

Bioluminescent bacteria

Taking cues from the firefly, a Dutch electronics company has created a product called “Bio-light”—an eco-friendly lighting system that uses glowing, bioluminescent bacteria. They’re not powered by electricity or sunlight, but by methane generated by the company’s Microbial Home bio-digester that processes anything from vegetable scraps to human waste. The living bacteria are fed through silicon tubes, and as long as they’re nutritionally-fulfilled, they can indefinitely generate a soft, heat-free green glow using the enzyme luciferase and its substrate, luciferin. They’re kept in hand-blown glass bulbs clustered together into lamps, but you can’t light up your house with them yet—the glow isn’t nearly bright enough to replace conventional artificial lights. They do, however, get people to think about untapped household energy sources and how to make use of them. The company, Phillips, also envisions the use of these Bio-lights outside the home—for nighttime road markings, signs in theatres and clubs, and even biosensors for monitoring diabetes.
