One of the most breathtaking aurorae from this weekend’s solar storm

Earth’s magnetic field was pummeled by a double coronal mass ejection (CME) over the weekend, giving rise to more than 24 hours of geomagnetic storms and exceptionally beautiful northern lights. Here, astrophotographer Brad Goldpaint  has captured a rare sight: a stunning pink aurora borealis.

NORTH AFRICA AND EUROPE FROM SUOMI NPP
Over a period of six orbits on on February 3, 2012, the recently launched Suomi NPP satellite provided the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) instrument enough time to gather the pixels for this synthesized view of Earth showing North Africa and southwestern Europe.
